6 Steps to Great Credit Card Deals
Credit card deals can be life changing deals, both for good and for bad reasons. A person can find a great credit card deal, one that fits them perfectly in every way and sign up for it. If they have the credit to be approved then they'll be furnished with the credit card they were after and from that point onwards their story can go in one of two directions.
They can spend responsibly and use the credit card to build up a good credit rating as well as use it to budget their cash flow and monthly expenses. They can be diligent in paying off their expenses on time every time and disciplined about not making a large number of frivolous purchases. They can be the epitome of a good credit user and if the credit card has a rewards program, they can use that in conjunction with making payments on time and in full to build up a lot of value in their credit card.
This is obviously the ideal. The opposite of that and unfortunately the situation that more people seem to find themselves in is the situation of having bad credit. They get the credit card and start out with good intentions, but as purchases build up and debt begins to accumulate and collect interest, these intentions fall off to the wayside. The person gets themselves into debt problems so deep and so all-consuming that they have no idea how to begin to get themselves out.
While there are other articles around that discuss ways to get out of bad debt problems, this article discusses how to create good ones in the first place. There is a very simple, six step solution to success when it comes to building good credit and following these six steps will allow you to possess a credit so good that you'll get to pick and choose only the best credit card deals.
Step #1 - Keeping Track of Your Credit Report
Obtain a copy of your credit report and read it over very carefully. You're looking for anything that might be outdated, incorrect or incomplete as far as information about you goes. If you're relatively new to the credit game then there might not be a whole lot of information there. Don't worry about it, as the next steps will create good information that you will begin to see on it in good time. Correct any changes by contacting the bureau and discussing the situation with them. As you begin to complete the other steps in the plan, be sure to check back on your credit report to see the effects.
Step #2 - Bank Accounts
Create a chequing account and if you want to a savings account as well. Make sure that your handling of these accounts is impeccable and responsible; else you'll end up doing more harm than good to your credit report. Create regular transactions on this account, even if they are merely taking money out and putting it back in again. Your goal here is to make yourself appear to have all of your finances under good control. Conveying that image will do wonders for your credit score.
Step #3 - Non Bank, Non Credit, but Just as Important
Open some kind of monthly account that is not a bank account or credit card. A good example of this is a gas bill, electric bill or a very good one is a cell phone service. Make sure that you pay the bills on time and every time, else your credit rating will suffer greatly. Generally, one late payment will end up hurting your credit score more than one on time payment will end up helping it. Diligence is required in building an excellent credit history and this step, if completed correctly, will do a lot to get you on your way.
Step #4 - Not Quite a Credit Card, but in the Ballpark
There are other ways to building credit than finding and signing good credit card deals and this step deals with them. The reason that there are so many different steps here is that a wide variety of things are taking into account in determining whether you have a good credit history or a bad credit history. Following all of these steps will tackle the issue from all angles and doing that will help to accelerate the building up of your good credit history.
With that in mind, the next step is to take out a loan from the bank. Any kind of loan will do, just make sure that it's in your name. Once you've done this, pay it back on time by making all the appropriate payments. Doing this will show your ability to pay back the money that you borrow and will make the next step quite a bit easier.
Step #5 - Apply for a Great Credit Card!
Now it's time to get a credit card. Find a great credit card deal that suits you well and apply for it. If you've done the previous steps properly and to their completion, your credit should be good enough that you should be able to get the card easily. Make purchases on the card that you would normally just use cash for and keep a careful budget of everything you do. Do not overspend! Avoid attractive impulse buys and remember that credit cards are not free money.
Over time your diligence will show in your credit report and in combination with the other four steps previous will result in you receiving an excellent credit score.
Step #6 - Be Careful Using Your Credit Card
There are really only five steps to this plan. As you do all of the five steps, remember to keep a diligent and disciplined mindset. Any lapse can result in an extremely poor credit score and if that happens then it's going to take you even longer to pull yourself out of the whole and start over again.
If you finish all five steps and have a great credit rating, then congratulations! If you want to improve it even further, repeat one or all of the steps again. Otherwise enjoy your good credit score and rest assured in the knowledge that people will be very willing to lend you money should you ever need to borrow it.
